ELCA scholarships may support study in a variety of academic areas, as long as the subject area is a strategic priority for the church/institution. Examples of possible study areas include (but are not limited to): theology, medicine, teaching, computer science, human resources, finance, music, environmental science, English language, social work, gender studies, development, and many other subject areas. The program provides scholarships from both unrestricted and donor restricted funds. A portion the program budget is supported by the ELCA World Hunger. Given this, the ELCA especially encourages to consider endorsing individuals who will study in one of the following World Hunger priority areas: justice work such as peace and reconciliation, gender justice, ethnic/racial justice; environmental protection and climate change; health; agriculture, livestock, food security; sustainable livelihoods; migration and refugee services; water resources; advocacy; and disaster response preparedness. If the requests are in areas beyond these subjects, individuals are still welcome to submit them for possible funding. In all cases, the ELCA prioritises requests that align closely with the strategic priorities of local church/institution.
